… ‘the sower’
My personal tribute to Vincent
‘Making sketches is like planting seeds to grow paintings’. Vincent Van Gogh
His work full of naturalism, inspired by Impressionism and Pointillism, heralds Fauvism and Expressionism.
Every work, every large-scale work begins with the seeds that we plant in our brain, with small works, however modest they may be. An artist, a craftsman, a worker, an employer, in short everyone, has the capacity to become a master of his art by working on sketches that will form the pieces of a puzzle forming the masterpiece of a lifetime. A remarkable result cannot be improvised; it is the fruit of constant and long-term work punctuated by mediation, contemplation and other reflections. The metaphor of the seed and the plant is interesting because the human brain functions in much the same way: if we plant an idea in it, we will reap actions that will end up becoming our contribution on this earth… or as ‘salt of the earth’!

‘touchstones'
inspired by Mozart Piano Concertos 21 & 24
... listen to the sudden 'stair-step' jumps
stairs are designed to be sublime
to elevate us to a higher place
stairs are designed with a vision
to relieve us from drowning
stairs are designed to assist us
we need each other in a community
stairs are built in the amid the rubble
'touchstones' arranged to make us go higher
stairs are built amidst our critics
threatening us as hungry wolves
stairs are built to inspire us
-stepping stones
-corner stones
-living stones
-touchstones
'touchstones' of compassion is a measure of our discipleship;
it is a measure of our love for God and for one another.

… primary colours
unravelling colours of mondrian… too long in a box
unscrambling from our isolation as we navigate
from inside our cocoon we decode the new normal,
rejuvenated we are once again surrounded by all
shapes and sizes, an infinity of colour to excite the soul
in our unravelled world... a new confidence is released,
living out of the box

had Piet Mondrian set his sails towards the shores of madras
instead of doing his ‘boogie woogie’ on broadway in 1943
he could be spicing things up a bit with his ‘red, yellow, and blue
sails would be billowing over seas of indigo blue, shimmering of flashes of tourquise
colours of golden rickshaws 'tut tuks' and the aromas of earth’s orange pigments
ground peppers, chilies, chutney flavours and cinnamon sticks
sacred cows would be bellowing and bring us closer to the evening of red skies
where bands of effervescent colours and the flash of neon lights
…let your imagination go! ...go simple, and go far Piet!
...it’s a hot town, summer in the city!

'shadows' - of bauhaus and de stijl
I am always conscious of how the shadow works in the design realms. Following the works of Japanese architecture, I see a fusion of light and the shape recognizing the interplay of light… equally important there is also the shadow.
The influence of the early Bauhaus and De Stijl movements of one hundred years ago, recognizes their stripped down aesthetic and can still be seen in the distinctive furniture, with its primary colors, bold lines, and simplified shapes. Both movements of Bauhaus (influences by Gropius in Weimar) and De Stijl (influences by Rietveld in Utrecht) owed much of their philosophy to “form follows function.” The original Bauhaus mission was to unite modern manufacturing with art. Bauhaus sought to infuse mass-produced products with their artistic viewpoint.

tillers of grace
our hope must be told
in our vision, even sideways
told as one who dwells
with others in the abyss
believing in turning
'swords into plowshares'
cutting furrows into our heart strings
can we dare to dismantle
...the idols of war?
give us a vision of hope, of healing
to embrace the joys for all people
and the suffering earth
told to dare to imagine, a future
where peace is not dismissed
...'but where else shall we go?
and to whom else shall we turn?'
it's time for a heart too heart talk
with God … look into a mirror,
we, you and I are the ones
... we’ve been waiting for
... tillers of grace
our hope must be told
in our vision, even sideways
told as one who dwells
with others in the abyss
believing in turning
'swords into plowshares'

Moby Dick - 'Rolling in the Deep'
... model of set design of 'Moby Dick - the Opera'
design interpretation by studioDB3
Moby Dick is a 'metaphorical' novel that I'm currently reading ... using many forms of symbolism. The story of an attempt to search the unsearchable ways of God through the adventure of captain Ahab in his search of Moby Dick, it describes the battle between the evil powers of the devil ... as in 'Rolling in the Deep' against the good powers of God. In this metaphor, the devil is in Captain Ahab, God is in nature, Christ is seen in Moby Dick, and mankind, is represented by the crew of the schooner 'the Pequod' sailing out of Nantucket. I highly recommend reading this book! The voyage of the Pequod represents the journey of mankind on earth until the death of Christ. “As they narrated to each other their unholy adventures, their tales of terror told in words of mirth; as their uncivilized laughter forked upwards out of them, like the flames from the furnace; as to and from, in their front, the harpooners wildly gesticulated with their huge pronged forks and dippers; as the wind howled on, and the sea leaped, and the ship groaned and dived, and yet steadfastly shot her red hell further and further into the blackness of the sea and the night, and scornfully champed the white bone in her mouth, and viciously spat round her on all sides; then the rushing Pequod, freighted with savages, and laden with fire, and burning a corpse, and plunging into that blackness of darkness, seemed the material counterpart of her monomaniac commander’s soul.” (Melville 463)

The never-ending tunnel at Passeig de Gracia – Barcelona - With ten lines, frequent modern trains and plenty of stations the Barcelona metro system is an excellent way to move around the city. You seldom have to change lines more than once to get anywhere in Barcelona. There is however one black spot; the dreaded tunnel at Passeig de Gracia but when you arrive at street level, passing through the ‘stairway to heaven’ ...the whole world becomes a stage! The works of Picasso, Antonio Gaudi, Salvador Gadi, Juan Miro are everywhere!

I still have a dream, a dream deeply rooted in the American dream - one day this nation will rise up and live to its creed. “we hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character… Martin Luther King, Jr. 1963

the sea is like a poem of silver linings written in the wind,
while you may not be able to see it you know when it’s there it fills our sails once again … beating sails, beating hearts the new wind restoring a new spirit stirring within watching spinnakers billowing and mirage sightings landmarks dotting our horizon with wind in our face a power not to be denied snatched from death to us free |
