se-man-tics Gr. "sēmantikós"
- is literally the ‘study of meaning’ and is primarily explored through the meaning of expressions and phrases in human languages and how we interpret meanings through the visual lens. I search for a metaphor in my pieces and use a variety of mediums as the series progresses.

Day 2/26 'B' for ‘butterfly’
We've all stopped in our tracks to watch as a butterfly moves through vast landscapes as if dancing on air! Like a metaphor for profound change in the cycles of our lives, transforming lives, perspectives, or lifestyle to another, the butterfly's remarkable shape shifting journey carries an important message for us to seek out and find our true essence, no matter how far removed it may be from our present selves. It's an inspiring message that teaches us that growth and transformation need not be traumatic or painful, but rather liberating and joyful, a natural part of life's continuous unfolding ... our Creator is in control.

About 'circumstances' and the curious chronicles of the letter 'C':
noun - a fact or condition connected with or relevant to an event or action.
Our English language is infamously difficult in part because its spelling befuddles as letters take on different sounds depending on what letters surround it. Think about these words: cease, coin, chic, indict, and discrepancy. In this string of terms, C sounds like S, K, Sh, and in one case it’s silent. Even within one word this letter doesn’t always maintain the same sound. Due in part to this phonetic flexibility, C is the 13th most frequently used letter in the alphabet and popularized only recently in the 18th century.

dis-ci-pline
noun - a branch of knowledge, behavior and mentoring
The root word of discipline is “disciple,” which comes from the Latin word ‘discipulus’ meaning “student.” Most people believe a disciple is a follower (probably because of the religious context of the twelve followers of Jesus), but in reality, it means student—as in, “one who studies or takes instruction and training.” It is derived from the root word 'discere' - ”to learn” When you understand discipline as a choice, you are in control...
More discipline, more choice, more control.
Less discipline, less choice, less control.

Ethnicity vs. Race
Race and ethnicity are typically misunderstood as most people often don’t fit into neat categories that are offered on forms with checkboxes. We don’t necessarily have any tests or scientific basis to separate people out; people are able to self-identify.
Ethnicity- Broad based on cultural expression and place of origin
Race- Narrow based on similar physical and biological attributes
According to the human genome project, our DNA is 99.9% the same and the differences between people are accounted for are less than 1% of DNA.8
In other words, we should celebrate and appreciate the differences of one another while keeping in mind we are all part of the same human family.

The words 'familial bonds' has a long history of referring to close relations or connections.
Our 'familial bond' is a strong connection between family members. It's easy to spot the Latin root meaning "family" in the word familial. This is a word that describes events, relationships, or all other things having to do with family... our 'family' is the 'proverbial egg, where we were hatched from'! We may feel that we have nothing in common particularly as we wage through the pandemic... ultimately however, our past holds the key to our future. Our creator and maker, holds the key... if we do not face where we come from, we will have difficulty understanding our present and future.

'where Linear Lines meet’ ... in Architecture
The Schröder House, Utrecht, The Netherlands by Gerrit Rietveld was built 100 years ago! The house was completed in 1924. And it represents the quintessence of the De Stijl principles, in architecture. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous house also became inscribed on two Dutch euro coins, in 2013.
Like Rietveld's Red and Blue Chair, each component has its own form, position and colour. Colours were chosen as to strengthen the plasticity of the facades; surfaces in white and shades of grey, black window and doorframes, and a number of linear elements in primary colours. Today, we don’t have an art and architectural “movement” comparable to De Stijl.

the early morning shines rays on ripened grapes

the heart of the one longed for, always near
two hearts rejuvenated in tranquility
wine permeates and itches the nose
the air, so fine as we meander

driving in a delightful 'deux chevaux'
our room with a view is so mesmerizing
thankful to the source of life, our Creator
Metaphysical art -‘Villa Nicoletta’ (Italian: pittura metafisica) was a style of painting developed by the Italian artists Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. The movement began in 1910 with de Chirico, whose dreamlike works with sharp contrasts of light and shadow often had a vaguely threatening, mysterious quality, "painting that which cannot be seen".
De Chirico, established the school and its principles in 1917.

… these are moments that rocked the world! The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed the world for ever!
Johannes Gutenburg printed 180 Bibles in 1450 (in Latin) in Mainz, Germany so everyone could read … no longer reserved for the priest at the local Catholic Church. Gutenburg not only changed the world of printing but 'rocked to pillars' of the Basilica’ of St. Paul’s Cathedral. With an increase in literacy, the more opportunities to own personal religious texts and growth of individual reading, the printing press ultimately undermined the Catholic Church and disrupted the European religious culture by spreading religious knowledge and shifting the power to the people! Followers could read the bible for the first time!
Sharing Music also became possible … enabling composers to write music to a greater audience more than ever before.
In 1501, Ottaviano Petrucci published Harmonice Musices Odhecaton A, which contained 96 pieces of printed music.
Now, many centuries later … we all have this capability in our homes along with computers and printers ... by simply pressing ‘P’ to print.

quix·ot·ic
/kwikˈsädik/
adjective - exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical.
Today, marks the day to have just completed reading the 950 pages of the epic novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes!
... highly recommended translation by Edith Grossman!
In another 'quixotic' moment, on September 19, 1783 Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, launched the first hot air balloon called 'Aerostat Reveillon’ from the grounds of the palace of Versailles, France. To think if only Don Quixote had a balloon nearby to get him out of those nasty predicaments and adventures that befell on the famous knight of chivalry! Since the 17th century the term 'quixote' was used to describe a person who does not distinguish between reality and imagination.
...what a wonderful word 'quixotic' is! While it is most often used to mean equally impractical and idealistic, it also has the sense of romantic nobility. Don Quixote, dreams up a romantic ideal world which he believes to be real, and acts on this idealism, which most famously leads him into imaginary fights with windmills that he regards as giants and herd of sheep to be an invading army. All along weaving his way through to find his true love with the help of his squire who was promised an island for his royalty!

sinuous, spatial, spiral, stairs
where social connections are made
going up or down a spiral stair
is a journey we all take of interconnectivity
and interconnections through
the twisting and turning path of life
some take stairs to seek protection
for some, our lives are a steady climb
for others, our rites of passage from one
phase of experience into another to climb
Jacob's Ladder which angels fly and
carry us in His arms both up and
down as sunlight filters down
the stairs, so please watch
your step, spiral stairs
can also take you ...for a ride!
caveat - in architecture, designing spiral stairs are always
something to avoid ... they keep you up at night!

can't see the forest for the trees? ...have you looked at the forest floor lately?
...so alive, (and of death) and of new living growth
I don't think there is nothing more poetic
as trees in a forest where trees that sing
have you noticed how trees interact with each other?
where mother trees and nurse logs are intrinsically linked
to nurturing and passing on their defence enzymes
matriarchs recognize their own ‘kin’ in this biodiversity
I dream of a world of communicating with the trees,
when tree fallers become guardians, stewards ... 'our gardeners'
practices need to change … like passing on the genes

I was born colour blind ...until I noticed the colours of my mother’s eyes were brown
as my dad looked down at me with his eyes of blue growing up, I was led to see more colours the shapes and textures of my siblings and the colours of a family tapestry
at school I would get out of hand with friends, studying in class the search was on for
a deeper understanding as colours of our ethnicity was everywhere
denim jeans was our uniform, later on in years, as the colours raged
and protests were on our streets, of bob dylan and joan baez
the colours of Woodstock ...reflections on ambition
over time we experience a world made up of brokenness
when daily news of fires and floods consume our lives
stepping up together, our community does it's part
and by our faith we choose to live in hope
with hands held out across the water
on this new dawn we share unity in our diversity
shoulder to shoulder, our colours become blended in forming stronger communities our lives are being tested, renewed, yet trying… to never give up… ‘united in colour’!

...my thoughts are with those who required an Xray
suffering of cancer or covid can be so intertwined
thinking about our creator, medical science and
providence fluttering through our minds are survivors,
can lifelines be fractured at this threshold
where the cross-hairs of our crossroads meet?
perhaps at a convergence or a dichotomy
speaks to us in a thousand different ways
and weren’t our paths leading to somewhere?
...when we meet each other in the quiet of the night
weren't our moments together meant to last?

the 'Y' gene ... as in a male
mirrored by yesterday's letter 'X' relating to balance and the natural intuitions ... as in a female.
in art and architecture, I rely on fundamental rules of
human proportions as first prepared by Leonardo da Vinci in 1490. Leonardo's image demonstrates the blend of mathematics and art during the Renaissance and demonstrates his deep understanding of proportion. In addition, the image represents a cornerstone of his attempts to relate man as in 'Y' to nature.
in today's letter, I superimposed the golden ratio, also known as the golden section, golden mean, or divine proportion, in mathematics, the irrational number (1 + Square root of√5)/2, often denoted by the Greek letter ϕ or τ, which is approximately equal to 1.618 (Phidias and Plato studied 'phi' and the golden section between 428-500 BC)

...the letter 'Z' the last letter but, this just may be the beginning of another journey or 'pilgrimage' ...
my personal journey started in Zeeland surrounded by water, just like in my mother's womb. Today, I reflect on my wife also, 'my mermaid' who lives with me by the 'zee' ... all together defined as noble characters... giving comfort, security, hope, love... making me even more accountable!
In the background of this letter 'Z' ... if you look carefully, I painted over another previous painting ... highlighting a 'brick wall' representing the fortifications such as a dyke barriers to keep us safe and secure representing what a 'home' should be throughout the 'storms' in our lives... stay safe!

the colour of your voice
what is the colour of your dialect?
...is it the same as your beautiful skin?
what is the colour of your speech?
...is it as exotic as the letters of your alphabet?
what's inside the evolution of our language?
...will it be something that will unite us?
what is the shape of your voice?
...will it teach us of love and to live in harmony?
how can I pretend to know the riddles in your voice?
...so enduring, pouring out over me over and over again.
when I trace the map of where you are from on your face,
...looking into each other's eyes, we actually touching souls.
